Silicon Graphics has to be one of the best companies to work for. Nevertheless, work can be a trial on occasion...

My Life as Work

[Sounds pretty bad when you put it that way, doesn't it? Anyway, I mostly have a lot of fun.]

Note: I've recently changed jobs inside SGI.
And there was much rejoicing! (by me, anyway).
I have started a new job where I am a "real" software engineer, working in a core IRIX programming group.

I used to be a Software Engineer in the Networking Services group in Silicon Graphics Corporate I/S, and as a side-effect of that position, I made available my experience in configuring and debugging SLIP and PPP connections (SGI systems only!) available to the net people.

However...

I no longer have any responsibility for remote-access "stuff", although I'm still a user of it. My PPP configuration pages are likely to be pretty static from now on, and I probably won't have as much time to answer questions as I used to.

However, I will probably be increasing the number of "freeware" ports that I maintain. They are all now in the format of the SGI Freeware Project. I currently have both older and newer versions of the software I've ported available on the Scott's Freeware Ports page (try saying that fast 3 times!).

The best short description of my title I have come up with is Jack of all Trades (J.o.a.T. for short). I wonder if it will still be applicable in my new job?

As an aside--- [I wish I'd thought of this first, because this link seems to accurately reflect my job as well... It's an especially appropriate anime reference, because if you want to send email to me at my home machine (delivery not guaranteed because of the intermittent link), address it to: scotty@skuld.corp.sgi.com.]
