Event Horizon
Event Horizon was a Montgomery 17, a trailerable
fiberglass "pocket cruiser" sailboat. It was designed by Lyle Hess, who is
well known for designing good performing, rugged small cruising sailboats.
The Montgomery 17 is a keel-centerboard design, with imitation
lapstrake construction and a masthead rig. In theory it would sleep 3, but
the quarter berth was really only suitable for a child, and I used it for
storage.
While I lived in L.A., I kept the boat on it's trailer in Marina Del Rey.
I took 3 1-week long single-handed cruises in it: twice to Santa Cruz
Island, and once to Catalina Island. I took many 2- and 3-day weekend
trips to Catalina Island, and up the coast to Paradise Cove. In the years
I had the boat in L.A., I probably sailed it over 100 days/year. I
especially liked the sunset weeknight sails in the summer.
I have some pictures of the boat scanned, but all were taken after I moved
to the SF Bay area, where I actually found a slip for it (in Coyote Point
Marina, about 1/2 way between San Francisco and Mountain View, where I
lived at the time).

I've got lots more pictures to scan in, if I can find them...
I was extremely happy with this boat from a handling and performance point
of view. An 8-lb Danforth anchor is a storm anchor! It had no problems
carrying several hundred pounds of crew and gear for a week of cruising. I
could even fit a 7-foot inflatable dingy! I didn't have a big enough tow
vehicle, though. Unfortunately, 17 feet is about the worst length for the
SF Bay chop, which is why I sold it.
